We just got back from a 2 day shoot in Los Angeles, CA covering the West Coast Trend Show. This promotional video is a quick grab bag of interviews and sound bites, of important retailers and vendors, from around the mens clothing industry, as they convene bi-annually at The West Coast Trend Show.
In August I was asked to make a promo video for the "West Coast Trend Show" in Los Angeles, CA. It's a bi-annual mens clothing show where retailers meet vendors all in one place to buy the clothing products they will sell in their stores, for the upcoming season.
The show organizer, Ken Haruta, wanted a video that had the actual people who come to the show to give their testimonials, in a positive, upbeat manner, in order to communicate that "this is a great place to be, and do business", in hopes that this would attract others who haven't made their way to the show yet.
I went to work the first day asking some key vendors what they thought of the show, and why they come year after year. Although some people were camera shy, I had a lot of gracious people who cooperated, and were willing to give their reccomendations - on film...er...video.
It was an extremely fast paced shoot. We arrived from San Francisco about 10:00am, and we were all wrapped up by about 3pm the next day. This presented a challenge in that I had to make a decision on who to interview in the short amount of time I had, and even at that, we were literally running from room to room, hoping we would catch our interviewee at a down moment, inbetween meetings.
During our one night there, there was even a "Casino Night" accompanied by a nice pizza and wine dinner. They brought in casino tables and had real dealers and chips, which would then be cashed in for raffle tickets later in the night to win all sorts of prizes donated by the vendors at the show.
I had to keep my set up fairly compact in order to carry it up and down elevators, and down hallways all day. I used a Canon 24-70L f/2.8 lens since it gave me the most flexibility. I couldn't handle lens changes in the small amount of time I had with each person, as well as set up the lavalier microphone and portable LED lights I was also using.
On the plane flight home I started visualizing how I would cut all this raw footage together, and what the "vibe" of the video would be. Firstly, its in Los Angeles...so I started to visualize a lot of glitz and glamour - a very flashy vibe. I decided to go with this as a theme and began the tedious task of finding the right music track to convey the feeling of the show. I landed on one that had a good upbeat tempo, and that could easily be at home as runway music at a fashion show.
I was recording all the audio with a wired lavalier mic, directly in to my Tascam DR-40. The fact that the wire was supposed to go underneath the shirt was an issue with some interviewee's who wern't exactly comfortable or willing to have the patience to bother rigging it up the correct way. I simply didnt have enough time to explain why it was supposed to be like this so I simply clipped it right to the outside of the collar of some people and tried to frame the majority of the wire out of the shot to reduce the distraction. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, and this was a minor issue that just wasn't worth dwelling on for too long.
At the end of the day, Ken and everyone else involved seemed to be extremely happy with the way the video turned out and Im really appreciative to have had the opprotunity create a video for such a great event and to meet all the great people from the show.
