Ghosts of War: WWII Destruction Photos Overlaid On Modern Streets

Dutch historian Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse has created some truely amazing photo mash ups with her Ghosts of  War photo series. It takes old photos from World War II and superimposed them on top of modern photos taken from the exact same spot, decades later.

I've seen this method before in photos from the 1906 San Francisco Earth Quake, although these war photos are arguably more haunting. I've picked out some of my favorites below. After years of hearing the stories and legends of the second world war, these photos really make me feel closer to history, and these events so much more "real".

“Captain WH Hooper, who commands the Company of the 314th IR of the 79th IUS D and some of his men surround a column of German prisoners. Column takes a southerly direction, it will join the POW camps located on the plateau of the Mountain Roule, near the farm of Fieffe.”
